Djokovic Delivers Caution to Jannik Sinner: Doping Ban Will Follow Him Like a "Shadow"
The tennis star has warned Jannik Sinner that his three-month ban for doping will linger over his career as a constant shadow – while also questioning the timing of the penalty last year.
The Ban Explained
The Italian player served a three-month suspension in February 2025 after the global anti-doping body accepted his explanation that a prohibited performance-enhancing substance, the steroid clostebol, had entered his system accidentally.
"That cloud will follow him just as the Covid controversy will follow me, for the remainder of our respective careers," the champion remarked in an interview on Piers Morgan: Uncensored.
"It is a situation where, it was so significant, and when that happens, with time it may lessen, but I don't think it will disappear. There's always going to be a certain group of people that will continually reference the incident."
Djokovic's Perspective
The Serbian player stated that Sinner, a regular practice partner, "had no intentional involvement", but he then scrutinized how the Italian managed to serve his time without sitting out any major tournaments.
"There is the lack of transparency, the inconsistency, the convenience [of] the ban occurring between major events, so he avoids skipping important competitions – it's just it was very, very odd," Djokovic added.
Broader Tennis Community Response
"I am dissatisfied with how the case was being handled and you could hear numerous fellow athletes, both male and female, who had some similar situations voicing their concerns publicly and asserting it represented favorable handling."
