United Nations Removes Penalties on Syrian President Before Presidential Visit

Security Council representatives voted in favour to a United States-backed measure ending penalties on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his presidential meeting the coming week.

He was appointed transitional president after leading a rebel offensive that ousted the former president in December 2024, concluding 13 years of internal conflict.

The US representative to the UN Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "a strong political signal" that recognised Syria was in "a new era" since Assad was deposed.

He had been subject to United Nations restrictions while commanding the religious organization HTS, which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. America delisted the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations this past July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister the interior minister.

The nation's top diplomat applauded the lifting of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks to Washington and to friendly nations for their support the Syrian nation and citizens."

Upcoming White House Meeting

Sharaa's White House visit this coming Monday follows US President Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president had made "good progress" in establishing peace to the war-torn country.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a real shot for national reconciliation".

The pair met for the first time this past May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia during a visit to Arab nations.

Subsequent to that discussion, the US president described Sharaa as a "tough guy" possessing a "powerful background".

His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria before he cut connections in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

The upcoming meeting is not Sharaa's first trip to the United States this year. This past fall, he made history as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the United Nations gathering in New York in almost 60 years.

Throughout his presentation, he stated the country had been "regaining its deserved status among the nations of the world" and demonstrated unity with the people of Gaza.
