Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at both ends of pitch

After a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had netted only one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.
